World Centric x SOPUDEP / 5 minute read
Haiti yields the lowest education rate in the Western Hemisphere. 78% of students drop out after primary school, 85% of teachers lack basic qualifications, and only 60% of Haitians can read and write. With access to a quality education, Haitians have the ability to transform the country.
Nonprofit Partner: SOPUDEP
In 2001, community members in Port au Prince were given a two-story burnt-out mansion to use as a school and in 2002 they opened their doors to 140 students from impoverished households. Today, Institution Mixte de SOPUDEP is a K-12 school serving approximately 800 students.
SOPUDEP’s approach to education is unique in Haiti: no child is turned away for lack of funds. Director Réa Dol’s mission is to expose students to a well-rounded education, both book-based and experiential. Her students learn that, in order to prosper as a society, they must practice equality and be active participants in the country’s healing.

"Haiti is a country of struggle and resistance. One of the greatest capabilities a Haitian has is resilience. Despite all the problems of hunger, poverty, lack of access to healthcare and insecurity in all its forms, Haitians always have a happy disposition. We are reeds -- even if we bend, we do not break. And we know with patience, we will see that one day, Haiti will rise and stand up again." |
World Centric has been supporting SOPUDEP since 2011, including the construction of a second campus, "The New School", with 20 classrooms which will serve an additional 1000 students. With the profits of fiscal year 2016-Present we have covered the staff salaries for the school.
