giving tuesday: Eradicating Poverty

World Centric + Spark Microgrants, Raising The Village / 15 minute read

Every year, thousands of people around the world participate in Giving Tuesday.  It's a day that encourages people to do good; to shift focus from the consumerism of Cyber Monday and support charitable efforts.

For those of us living above the poverty line, we can provide immense benefit to someone living in extreme poverty at minimal cost to ourselves.

Nonprofit Partner: Raising The Village

Around the world, over 700 million people live in just $1.90 a day. And, 400 million are estimated to live on even less - just $0.75 a day.

Raising The Village partners with last-mile, rural communities in Uganda to develop initiatives that help pave the way out of ultra-poverty towards economic self-sufficiency.
Through a one-time investment model of $100 per family, RTV creates a development plan that is low-cost, livelihood based, and community driven. This development plan increases the average daily income of RTV partner families from $0.45 to $2.67 within 36 months.

Nonprofit: Spark Microgrants

At the community level, Spark Microgrants is working directly with people in West Africa to drive local change. They do this using the "Spark Process", which includes meetings and trainings to help communities organize, conceptualize and implement their chosen project and receive a microgrant to fund it.

In Paminajomo, Uganda, Spark partnered with a local farming community to increase agricultural productivity and diversity in their farms by starting a produce business. Supporting agriculture businesses help community members with not only food security and nutrition, but also produce more income for their families to use for school fees and basic needs.

Here, the women of Paminajomo shell fresh beans from their most recent harvest.

In Rwanda, Wencesla from the Muregeya Village worked through the Spark Process with her community to start her own business:

"Before Spark came in our community, I had no idea how I could develop a project. After getting skills from the FCAP, it opened my mind to having a small business that can help me to feed my family. I requested a small loan from our community savings and started my own business. Now I supply charcoal in town and my life has changed. I am making money through that business, and am able to pay school fees for my kids. In the future I am also planning to get toolkits for my kids so they can also start their own businesses. I am really grateful to be part of the Spark community."
Giving Tuesday
No matter how much you’re able to give,
you can make an impact on someone’s life.

Climate change deepens inequalities for the poorest people on the most fragile land. Use your Giving Tuesday dollars to accelerate climate justice. Enabling marginalized communities to succeed benefits both people and planet.
