A Cafe That's Fully Closing The Loop
Meet Laney & Lu and Mr. Fox Composting

World Centric Staff / 4 minute read
Across North America, many restaurants are discovering small-scale community composters that are stepping up to help local residents and foodservice operators reduce their waste.

In Exeter, New Hampshire, local cafe Laney & Lu believes that food can serve a far greater purpose than to simply fill our stomachs. Founder Jennifer Desrosiers believes that the ‘right’ food nourishes our souls, builds community, and connects us with the earth.

“We began LANEY & LU with a strong vision for inspiring community and believe that we have a responsibility to make a positive contribution in the world. This is reflected in how we want our guests to feel seen and important,” explains Jennifer.

Laney & Lu is as close to zero-waste as they come - all of their packaging is compostable and gets picked up by Mr. Fox Composting, a local community hauler.
“We began LANEY & LU with the belief that we have a responsibility to make a positive contribution in the world. We mindfully source everything from our food to our supplies to our packaging. World Centric is an obvious choice for LANEY & LU. Their company values are in alignment with ours and the quality of their products bolsters our customer’s experience with our food. And, it 100% meet our sustainability ethos."

Each week, Laney & Lu fills about twelve large green bins with food scraps and compostable packaging with the help of Mr. Fox Composting, a community hauler.

Mr. Fox started over ten years ago with the goal of providing composting service along the New Hampshire and Maine seacoast. According to their website, “we believe that the future of our planet is dependent on our communities changing small habits. Composting our organic waste is an easy way to make a difference in the waste stream.”

Some of Laney & Lu's finished compost gets brought back to their onsite 'Lu Gardens' to nourish the soil. Each spring they use this soil to plant veggies and herbs that go back into their bowls - creating a truly, full circle process.
